With 80,472 new cases, India’s COVID-19 tally crosses 62 lakh-mark

 India’s COVID-19 tally has crossed 62 lakh-mark with a spike of 80,472 new cases and 1,179 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, as of Wednesday morning.



The total number of coronavirus cases has increased to 62,25,764 out of which 9,40,441 are active cases, 51,87,826 have been cured and discharged while 97,497 COVID patients have died due to the pandemic, the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare said.



According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a total of 7,41,96,729 samples have been tested for COVID-19, up to September 29. Of these, 10,86,688 samples were tested on Tuesday.

The ICMR has also said that “Since a large portion of the population is yet susceptible, prevention fatigue is to be avoided and 5T strategy (Test, Track, Trace, Treat & Technology) is to be adhered to.”

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday announced that it has extended the COVID-19 lockdown till October 31, with some more relaxations.



In the wake of festive seasons ahead, Dr VK Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog, stated that “We all need to ensure that in the coming months, we celebrate ‘mask wali puja, mask wali Chhath, mask wali Diwali, mask wala Dussehra, mask wali Eid,’ in order to contain the spread of COVID-19.”

According to the ICMR’s (Indian Council of Medical Research) second national serosurvey report, one in 15 individuals aged more than 10 years were estimated to be exposed to COVID-19 by August 2020.
